New Years Resolution

Yes it's that time of year again, where people make resolutions and stick hard to them. Well at least for the first month. Gym memberships increase while parking decreases. Yet I've always said it won't be long before there are more parking spaces available. Clearly that is the wrong attitude to have considering that our country is so obese and unhealthy. I should be happy there are no parking spots available that means people are making an effort. The problem is people give up to soon. It's so easy to tack on the weight especially over the holidays, and so hard to get it back off.

I'm struggling myself right now. This post baby body sucks. I was doing really well with my work outs and eating right and then last week while my folks were in town, I blew it. So..nothing to do but get back up and start over again.

I've set some goals for myself this year. Attainable goals. I'd like to share them with you and maybe that will hold me accountable and then also challenge me to get them done.

1. Get my pre baby body back. Man I miss that feel good naked feeling.
2. Get my personal training certification. So I can show you how to get that feel good naked feeling.
3.  Be a better person. I like me, but I can definitely improve upon patience, understanding and forgiving.
4. Make all of Greyson's food - Paleo style.

I'm still working on my 5 year plan but I can't wait to share it with you once I'm done with it. Share some of your year long goals with someone, me even.

Week One ~ Smashed!

Week one is over and done. It was a rough week. I was more sore than I have been in a long time. Mostly my legs since my arms are carrying around a 13 pound 7 week old and are bulking up. I thought since I carried around so much weight during pregnancy I would be okay, turns out..I was wrong. wrong. wrong. It's okay, I think my muscles are coming back and recognizing that they have work to do. Its still going to be a long ways away.

Most people find it hard to do things when they have a newborn, myself included. Its hard to get laundry done, to maintain a schedule, dishes, eating etc. But I force myself to take an hour out of my day, even if it means missing an hour of sleep to work out and be active. I take Greyson with me. He sits in his carrier and sleeps or watches and I work out.

Jessica and I worked out on Friday since I wasn't able to make boot camp. Although I didnt make it then, I did find time in the middle of the day to do it. Around the time I knew he'd be sleeping. We did 50 squats, 40 lunges, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups and 10 burpees. But we did it twice!! She of course beat me...but that's okay..I know I still have a long way to go. I also know that I won't give up! I've also found since I've been working out hard again that I have more energy..so I don't really miss that hour of sleep.

If you have children it's important that you set a routine for yourself, not just your child or children. You still have to eat, sleep, exercise and everything else you did before them.

1. Plan your meals ahead of time and cook in the middle of the day if you are off work. It's okay to heat things up. If you are working, take time out on the weekend to do some cooking for the week, if you find you don't have the time you want. Call a friend or family member to watch your children for a couple of hours while you do it. It WILL benefit you.
2. Consider working out the time you have to yourself each day. You don't have to think, you don't have to worry, you just do work. It will help you let off some steam as well. You won't feel so overloaded and bogged down.
3.  Drink lots of water. Sometimes when your hungry, you're actually dehydrated. It will help prevent you from snacking on anything that's bad.
4. Remember...the healthier you are, the more energy you'll have, you'll feel like a Super Mom or Dad, also you'll be providing good examples to your children. It's important that they know that exercise and a good diet are important in keeping one healthy. Greyson and I stretch everyday..well in fact, I help him stretch right now. But my plan is to stretch with him each morning and to do an activity (when he's older) that helps get him moving about..one day I hope he will CrossFit with me!

I hope this helps new mommies and daddies. I took the first few weeks when I was recovering to think about and plan how this was going to work since Daddy isn't home a lot. Giving you something to go by and what worked for me will hopefully steer you in the right direction.

Having children doesn't mean that you can't have a healthy lifestyle. Do it. Be it. Keep it.

The Fat Loss Miracle Journey

So I've started working out again - 7 weeks post baby. I'm still not able to CrossFit like I want to, they said give it another couple of weeks, but I did go to boot camp. I started on Halloween..scary ehh. Musta been a full moon to get me to go since I was up with the babe quite a bit that night.

Working out was hard. It felt like I was starting from scratch again, I guess that's what pregnancy, plus 6 weeks of hospital bed rest will do for your body. Ugh. I have lead filled tree trunk legs...at least that's the amount of work I got out of them or at least seemed to. I almost even fell down some steps face first, now THAT would have been a sight to see. But I've started my journey and am going to write about it after each work out or weekly, whichever I have time for. I'd like for other people to know that it can be done because I'm going to do it, and that means its anyone's own will power to do what they want to do.

I'm baaaaaccckkkk

But who really  knows for how long, I think my babe closed his eyes for a mere 30 seconds, 45 seconds ago, so I'm sure he will want something here shortly.

Boy sure wish someone would have warned me how much work this is, well my mom kinda did..when I was 16. "Chrissy you don't want a baby right now, live your life, go have fun." Well and I did. And it was a fun life and it still is..just in a different way. It's a different chapter of the same book with a well worn cover and the title half rubbed off.

I've just now reached my 6 week mark and I can start living again..mommies you know what that means...the ability to work out and be intimate with your husband, but the desire to do neither. Actually I can't wait to work out again, I feel like I have this pent up energy to go bust some butt and do 100 box jumps. Realistically I know that it won't quite happen like that.

My doctor released me to exercise, but not CrossFit since its pretty hard core. So basically I can walk on the treadmill or stairmaster, do some crunches maybe some leg lifts, and nothing over 20 pounds. Big Fat Boo! Heavy weight lifting can cause a prolapsed uterus, and we all know I don't need to be in the hospital on even more bed rest...I think I'd hang myself with a stethoscope. So a couple more weeks and I can get back to it. I am going to start building up my stamina again, its been so long since I've worked out, breaking a sweat will feel so new to me. It will be like starting over again.

It's going to be hard since I've already done this once and its much easier to maintain what you have than to have to start over again, BUT it will be worth it again to feel the way I felt before without all the added fluff I have now. I've lost 20 pounds so far but I still have about 30 to go.

Spot Reducing

It's been awhile since I've posted anything-apparently I was busy getting pregnant. We are due in October and are expecting a little boy Greyson Alexander.

Even though I am pregnant I am still keeping up with exercise, I will admit that its something that is very hard to do while you are experiencing all day morning sickness-and I did take a couple of weeks off due to that. Boy did I sure notice a difference when I went back to it though. I now do a program that CrossFitMom generously posts daily. So no, even while you are pregnant you can work out, the idea is to maintain what you've worked so hard for. Please always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program though.

I get a lot of questions about how to tone my belly, what about my legs, I can't get rid of this fat on my hips..and yet you see tons of infomercials promoting products focusing on one area..there are supremely toned and lean professionals selling these products-yet they didn't get that body from strictly doing sit ups and the ab roller for 30 minutes a day. Hours spent taking pills, doing sit ups & using topical creams are all ways to NOT get toned.

Why do they advertise them if they won't work? They appeal to everyone's sense of vulnerability. Spot reducing doesn't work because you can't tell your body where to obliterate fat from-did you tell it where you wanted it to go in the first place?? We store energy in our bodies for later use-it's just what  your body does.

The key to getting toned and healthy is #1. DIET! I can't stress that enough. Lean meats, veggies and low carbs are the key to a healthy diet. #2 is a consistent exercise program - one involved with some cardio and weight training/resistance.

Wasted Opportunity

I write a lot about food, behavior and attitudes. It's a way for me to vent out my frustration with people and hopefully a way for you (generally speaking of course) to view things in a different light. 


Many people find it difficult to motivate themselves, I can understand that, I work harder when I am in a group and someone is pushing me, its my competitive nature. "there's no way she's going to get more push ups than me" The same thing happens with food. Here we are, Maximum Fitness, running a 90 Day Challenge to get you on your feet and to help you lose weight for summer. It's an awesome opportunity and honestly its time to start upping the ante NOW. Unless of course you could care less how you look , feel, etc., but I highly doubt this is the case. Everyone wants to look good and feel good, you are no exception to that. 


When we offered the 90 Day Challenge, we had several people voice complaints over the length of the challenge. Why? Why would you complain about something we are offering you, after all you did voice your concerns over nutrition on numerous, numerous occasions (I have the voices in my head to prove it).   We want to help you succeed and show you a different kind of lifestyle that you WILL grow accustomed to and even like. I feel like a parent with unruly children sometimes, WE ALL want what's best for you. WE ALL want you to succeed in your health journey and WE ALL want to help you get there. It's an amazing feeling accomplishing something that a lot of people look down on. Your friends and family who aren't on board just want you to fail so that they can feel better by their lack of commitment to their own health. 


So we offered a 30 day challenge and we've had several people sign up for it and I think its awesome. But where are all the others who requested a shorter challenge?  You asked for it, we gave it, now what's the excuse? 


If you can honestly eat right on your own-GO YOU!! I truly mean that and I will be your cheerleader for life, (just let me know so I can go buy the outfit and cheer you on at dinner time) But most people need accountability and that's what we are here for! You have to be willing to make the changes necessary in your life-Yes, its way easier to throw a processed meal in the microwave, but think about this: Do you want your children, your family to suffer later in life just because it's easier now? Don't we teach our children to not take the easy way out and to work for the things you want?  Just some thoughts for you to think about!

When you want it, you do it!

As many of you already know, I am former chiropractic office manager, and currently a client relation specialist (among other things) at Maximum Fitness. It's a personal training facility in Mt. Washington, we even won Best Gym and Best Personal Training (yes, I just plugged that). I work out regularly, though its not so much as working out as it is training my body for anything and everything. I eat well, but by no means am I perfect. I am human, like everyone else. I fail but I get back up again. Getting back up again is the most important part.

You've got to have goals and you've got to work for them. I get so tired of hearing people complain about not being able to lose weight or eat right. I've heard it all at this point and I haven't even been here that long. As someone who coaches people and helps them, for free might I add, I get frustrated when I waste my breath. ( I now know why Kyle used to just drop his head and shake it if I complained about food) If you aren't going to follow a plan that works, I'm not going to waste my time. Imagine you scolding your child for getting into the cookie jar, day after damn day. You get irritated at some point right and you just want to yell. "I've told you 100 times to not do that".  You know I'm right. 

I'm not a doctor, nor am I someone with degrees in nutriton, BUT I will tell you I have alot of experience in nutrition. I fought my own battles, learned to cook only 1 year ago, when I started boot camp. Kyle told me I had to follow this diet, I had to learn to cook and honestly I was pissed. Like I don't have enough to do as it is. Uggh. If I left the cooking to someone else, say my fat loving, butter pouring, fried food husband, well,  I was going to remain fat.

You control what you put in your body. When you do control what you put in your body and its the "right" fuel, you go further. Your energy lasts longer. If you have more energy, you accomplish more, meaning more energy to cook or play with your child or work out harder. If you are working out harder and making healthier food choices then you will see results in your performance, weight and overall health. All this sounds elementary but sometimes people need to hear it, read it, see it.

I work 11-12 hours everyday, plus I do all the laundry at home, cleaning, and most of the cooking (now that I have Davey converted he helps). I also work part time at the chiropractic clinic on the weekends. I still find time to cook. I usually make alot of something and eat on it for a couple days, plan snacks etc. If I can do it, you can do it. Instead of sitting down when you get home from work, start cooking, get everything done for the next day. Then sit down and rest. If you're anything like me, once I sit my butt on the couch, its pure relax mode after that. I still manage to be in bed by 10 or 1030 every night.

 Now, if you read this and think I'm talking to you in particular, well I am. If you read this and start getting defensive or start making excuses..then that's why I posted this. I'm not singling anyone out,  I want everyone to succeed.

Coming into CrossFit

Sadly, as some of you may know, I have quit Killer Kyle Boot Camp. What?! You're saying, no boot camp? What about all that hard work you've been doing for a year? What about the 28 day challenge and all this Paleo talk? Well.....

I've entered a new world. I was nervous at first and honestly, was considering not even trying it. I kept hearing about these killer WODs (Work out of the day), different exercise, I mean what the hell is a snatch. I know what the urban meaning of snatch is...but an exercise? What the hell. Finally I told myself, I'm not going to hold myself back because of some stupid fear I might fail. Just do it. (Yes, I often pep talk myself-so what)So...I did it.

I started on a cold Saturday morning (not counting the 300 burpee, 150 squat session Jess and I did) and we ran outside with a 25 pound weight for a mile. Then we went inside and did so much more, felt like a little of everthing, then we ran 2.5 more miles carrying a 25 pound weight again. The whole time I was thinking, what did I get myself into..but I did it. Even finished, out of breath, worn out and exhilerated. It's truly amazing what the human body really can do.

I was sore, tired, hungry and I felt GREAT. It had been a long time since I felt that good after a work out. Boot camp always did it for me, but CrossFit, well its amazing. I can tell a difference in my body after only one week. It actually makes me in a good mood-after-of course. I'm really excited to see if I've improved and by how much in a month, I may go back and re-do some of those exercises just to see.

Some of the WODs seem super easy, and they are usually the hardest. But you keep giving it all you got, you keep pushing until your done, and when you finish-you finally breathe. You recover. And you prepare and look forward to the next time. That's all for now folks, I'll keep you posted on progress.

Winter Blues

I am so tired of dang winter time. Snow, slush, wet shoes, and the inevitable salt that comes with it. I sweep up more salt than dog hair. Which is saying a lot. 


I'm ready to get active-outdoors. Hiking, camping, boating and laking (yes..its a word, Amy G. and I made it up) still seems so far away. I'm ready for shorts and tank tops and for my husband to finally take off the dang Carhart jacket he wears as a second skin. Plus, sleeping in sweatpants, long socks and a long sleeve t-shirt isn't really helping much in the romance department. 


Winter makes me tired & irritable. I have to make myself be active, not including the ass kicking I get every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday at 5:30am. (Yes, those of us who come that early are "out of our minds" but we've made the decision to better ourselves and it's okay to be crazy when it comes to that). Stores are already selling summer gear, bathing suits, shorts, and even flip flops-my all time favorite part of summer. I think that's awesome marketing actually. Sell me a bathing suit now that I can buy, then put in my closet to wear in 6 months. In that amount of time, I've already forgotten about it and have to buy another one. Yep, I've done it. I get it honest though, I remember my mom would wrap all our Christmas presents and then look confused on Christmas because we didn't "get" something she bought. Then she'd proceed to look all over the house for it. I think after so many years of making fun of her for this, she just doesn't give us the items she forgets.


This year I'll have to buy new bathing suits seeing as my old one's dont fit anymore (thank you 28 day challenge, Maximum Fitness, & Paleo) but I'm going to be smart about it. I'm not going to get one until April. That is unless Punxsutawney Phil doesn't see his shadow, then its ON.

Working out, Recovering & Inspiring

I don't know about you, but after a workout with Kyle, I'm wore out. My first couple of months I'd go home and just lay on the cold floor, I figured this was my "recovery period", but really it just made my soreness worse. I couldn't figure out if I was really THAT out of shape or if I was working THAT hard. At first it was cause I was outta shape, and I couldn't believe it. I've been athletic all my life, but I was.

In fact, I didn't think I was as out of shape and over weight as I was. Love blinds you and makes you comfortable and Davey loved me (really I think he loved the DD's and ignored the rest), my friends loved me, so who cares. So..I didn't really think about being out of shape. Then reality hit! I saw a picture of me and I was like Oh hell no..that's not really me...is it?? It spurred me into action. I emailed Kyle, (I've told him this story a hundred times) and asked about joining boot camp. He gave me the prices, told me to email him when I was serious ( he only wanted motivated people in boot camp-and yes..he said that to me) because boot camp is really hard. What I heard was: I don't think you can handle it. Anyone who knows me knows that you don't tell me I can't do something...ITS ON KYLE.

It's still on! I don't take nearly as long to recover as I used to, but then again I have a system in place. I tell myself it's only 45 minutes of your whole day, Get It and then Go Home!  I go home and "recover" with my Recovery Shake from Prograde, http://maxfitstudio.getprograde.com/ (yes, I know it's not paleo) and I stretch some more then shower. Then I eat my breakfast, which is usually eggs in various formats, scrambled or hard boiled. I haven't tried Paleo breakfast yet, since it involves more cooking and I only have so much time before work. I prepare my lunch for the day and make enough to carry over into dinner. It's all about planning, I've found tons of taste good recipes I'm willing to share.

It's been a year since I joined Maximum Fitness, I've lost 40 something pounds in that year. I don't really watch my weight (the number)  now as I once did, too often people get caught up in that only.   My goals have changed from when I first started boot camps (thanks Lindsey, Ashley, & Jessica). I want different things now and I work towards them (girls with muscles are still sexy). I feel better. I have more energy and I feel great about that. Sitting on the couch everyday because you don't have any energy is depressing, get up, get moving, get fit. That's all for now folks!

Fitting Fitness Into Your Life

It's not always easy, it's not meant to be. Easy=Lazy. If you want to be a lean, mean, fighting machine, you gotta put in the effort. I hear, "I dont have time" or "I have kids" or something else equally lame. I find, that everyone has just the amount of time to do the things they really want too, for example watching TV or eating out (mostly badly) with friends, ect. Think about it, I bet you get the point.

I detest cooking, always have, but if I left it up to my husband, I'd weigh a whole lot more and not be any where near healthy. So, I sucked it up and took control of my eating/cooking habits. I find that if I prepare several meals at once or at least get everything ready such as chopping, dicing, marinating, ect...that each meal doesn't take quite as long as I thought. Another option is to double your meal planning so you can eat on something the next day at work for lunch. Not only are you eating healthier, you are saving money from eating out. Money that could be invested into say, an exercise program, (such as Max Fit Boot Camp or personal training),  which you couldn't find the money for before.

I used to tell myself I worked too late to exercise, I couldn't find the time to do any of it, I mean a 12 hour day is a long day right? Then you have kids at home, dinner to cook or laundry to be done. So, being a morning person I chose to get up an hour earlier everyday and workout. Yes it's earlier, but after a routine of doing this for a couple weeks, your body gets accustomed to the workout and you wont even miss the sleep. I promise. Now, I'm not saying I'm never tired, nor are there some mornings where I would rather sleep in, but I weigh that against working out. Honestly, I feel so much better when I make the effort, inside and out. You will too.

When you first start a nutrition or fitness program, your body does rebel against it. Don't let it. Take control of your life/body. You tell it who's in charge, and the end results will be worth it.
